Arriving in London, you are suddenly expected to file stories on an unending range of subjects, many involving Government departments. These departments can seem impenetrable. Which is the relevant office to contact? Who should you speak to? What can they provide? How do you set up an interview with a Minister?

Starting out as a London correspondent can seem daunting, but help is at hand. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and FPA are organising a “Meet Whitehall” event for new (and newish) foreign correspondents. Even if you are a longer-established correspondent you might like to meet some new contacts and keep in touch with old ones.

The workshop will start with some opening words by Matt Tee, Permanent Secretary, Government Communications and a welcome by Ian Hargreaves, Director of Strategic Communications at the FCO. You will then be able to walk round the stalls and make contact with press officers from Whitehall departments and other useful organisations such as the Financial Services Authority and Metropolitan Police.

If you would like to attend, please e-mail Davina at the FCO by Wednesday 3 February: Davina.crole@ips.fco.gov.uk
